Mt. Whitney has found its footing in West Yosemite play. Tonight brings another team that can say the same.
The Pioneers enter their 6:30 p.m. matchup at Tulare Western with a 12–7 overall record and a 3–0 league mark. Tulare Union is 10–12 overall but unbeaten in four league games. Whatever happened during their demanding early schedules, both teams have put themselves in position to contend.
Whitney’s season has revealed an offense with several ways to score. Junior Jamen Radmacher leads with 60 reported goals, and senior Eli McLennan has 48. Their production gives opponents two immediate concerns, but focusing too heavily on them leaves room for sophomore Micah O’Dell, sophomore Alex DeBock and senior Ruben Ramirez, who have combined for another 80.
The connection between those scoring options matters just as much. Freshman Zane Piper’s team-leading 32 assists reflect his growing role in getting the ball where it needs to go. His 38 steals also lead Whitney, with Jamen and Ruben contributing to the defensive work that gives the Pioneers additional possessions. Across the season, that combination of finishing, distribution and pressure has become a strength.
Tulare Union presents a different challenge. Senior Caiden LaPoint has scored 98 goals in the team’s posted statistics, more than half its recorded total. With 22 assists and 33 steals as well, his influence extends beyond the shot itself. Whitney will need to account for him without allowing the rest of Union’s offense to operate freely.
Seniors Noah Pistoresi and Brandon Morais make that difficult. Pistoresi has 23 goals, while Morais has paired 21 goals with 20 assists. Union has experienced players who can take advantage when a defense commits too much attention to one scorer.
There is experience in both cages, too. Whitney senior Casey Sherbrook has 152 reported saves, and Union junior Evan Dutto has 157. Against those goalkeepers, creating a clean opportunity could matter more than simply putting another shot on goal.
For Coach Steven Chapman’s Pioneers, tonight is a chance to bring the pieces together against another league contender. They have scoring spread across several players, a freshman helping direct the attack and a senior goalkeeper behind them. The next step is making those strengths hold up when possessions become harder to win.
Both teams have earned their unbeaten league starts. Tonight, one will have to defend its own while trying to end the other’s.
